Arashiyama is a scenic district located on the western outskirts of Kyoto, Japan. It has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and travelers since the Heian period, known for its breathtaking natural beauty, historic temples, and cultural landmarks. The area is particularly famous for the Bamboo Grove, the Togetsukyo Bridge, and Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Faits intéressants sur Arashiyama
The rustling of bamboo in Arashiyama’s Bamboo Forest is considered one of Japan’s most beautiful natural sounds and has been included in the country’s list of "100 Soundscapes of Japan" by the Japanese government.
The Tenryu-ji Temple, built in 1339, is famous for its traditional Zen garden, which has remained almost unchanged since the 14th century. The garden was designed by Muso Soseki, a renowned Zen master and landscape architect.
At Iwatayama Monkey Park, visitors can interact with wild Japanese macaques while enjoying a panoramic view of Kyoto from the top of the hill.
The Hozu River, now famous for its scenic boat cruises, was once an important transport route used to carry logs and goods to Kyoto, dating back to the Edo period
Near the Randen tram station in Arashiyama, visitors can admire the Kimono Forest, an art installation of illuminated pillars wrapped in colorful kimono fabric, creating a magical atmosphere at night.
